Avalon Vineyard

Avalon Vineyard is situated on the site of a historic vineyard near Glastonbury and was started from scratch by myself, Hugh Tripp, and my wife, Hilary. Starting on just half an acre in 1981, our first wines won awards in national competitions. Encouraged, we bought more land to expand plantings and build our own winery. From the start we were committed to organic principles. This was facilitated by our choice of resistant ‘hybrid’ varieties of vine that do not need to be sprayed with fungicide (which is something that happens even in many organic vineyards).

And it's 'wee' for a reason - we have no ambition to be the biggest farm shop around; we'd rather focus on trying to become the best. That starts with producing the most mouthwatering berries and tasty free range eggs and extends to choosing only the best local produce to help stock our apple-crate shelves.

Local food and produce is at the heart of Bedfordshire Growers and so we pride ourselves in selling only the freshest and most local of products and always, wherever possible, try to follow the seasons. Many of our vegetable and salad lines come from Bedfordshire as do our Eggs, meats and pies. We also have very local Jam and Chutney producers as well as very local rapeseed oils. All of our bread is made for us at Ampthill and our cakes less than 30 minutes away in Royston.
