In 1997, Adrian Halstead, always a keen allotment gardener, took a leap of faith and bought the nursery in rural Barcombe, four miles west of Lewes and twelve miles north of Brighton. He began the conversion to organic status under the auspices of the Soil Association with the idea of starting a local vegetable box scheme.

Taylors Farm Shop has been in the Webster family for over 100 years and is currently run by the third generation of the family – Roger, Bernie and two of their four children Andrew and Joe. Before this, the farm had been a traditional mixed arable and livestock farm, growing wheat ,barley and sugar beet, along with around 50 beef cattle. Paddy's parents, John and Jill, we're first generation farmers and moved to Hill Farm in 1962. It was their foresight that created the opportunity to market farm produce directly to the public, and even let them pick it themselves.
